My name is Mike Walls and I am running for Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees - District 5.
I am a proud graduate of BISD class of 1995. My wife, Adie is a BISD graduate and we have raised our three children within BISD schools. Two of them have graduated (2019 and 2021) and now attend Texas State University and our youngest is in 8th grade at LJIS. Our children participate or have participated in a number of BISD programs including band, jazz band, choir, drama, and soccer.
My wife and I are local small business owners and provide services to our elderly community. We employ over 100 local individuals and are very active in many community wide endeavors.
I have been involved in our public education system in various ways, whether volunteering for different booster clubs, sitting on the board of an education foundation (Bandera ISD) advocating on behalf of parents and students, to regularly attending and participating in our local BISD school board meetings.
After the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent closing of our schools as they moved to a virtual environment, I began reaching out to BISD stakeholders to gather input on district-wide issues and concerns. To date, we've built a group of over 3,000 members who share concerns and solutions to some of today's most pressing issues. My intent to is expand this community outreach and involvement in order to gain district wide communication with all BISD stakeholders.
I then began regularly attending school board meetings and speaking on behalf of hundreds of stakeholders regarding concerns. At almost every turn I found we were stifled and not able to have full discourse with our elected representatives in a public forum.
My goal is to create a more transparent and inviting environment at the school board level for parents, students, teachers, and all BISD stakeholders to have a say in their schools are run.
